Reconstruction Chapter 16

1.  I think that Andrew Johnson was never for the African people, he showed that he did not want to help them. Johnson was born in the south and I don’t thinks roots were far from there he I think he wanted the south to raise again and was against freedmen. He fought with congress in every way to prevent helping the African people, and by telling the southern states to not side with the north was his way of showing that we was not trying to help Africans. Some of the laws to help the African people that were put into place didn’t really help them, by not helping them get lands just voting rights but them back to square one, working for their former owners because that was the only thing they knew how to do.

2. Success that came from reconstruction is that that it restored the United States into a unified nation, by 1877 all states that were former Confederate states had made new Constitutions. They also now acknowledged the 13th,14th and 15th amendments. One of the failure is that the Civil War was to help free slaves. It did in away but they worked for almost nothing and still work for almost free as the African people work for very little, and were still treated differently.

3. I can’t say if they should have been treated more harshly or not. I believe that the United states wanted to be successful and that if they would have been more harsh on the south would it have rebuilt or just died away and the African might have taken advantage and took over in the south. I don’t think the US wanted that to happen.
